Black Day Blue Night

I have to admit, I'm grateful for this new wave of crime films coming along in Tarantino's wake--especially when they don't try to emulate the big Q. Night is kind of an odd one, though--its slow-paced atmosphere is similar to that of reading a pretty decent crime story that ultimately peters out. J.T. Walsh plays a cop on the trail of some armored-car robbers, one of whom fatally shot his partner. Elsewhere, the fabulous Mia Sara (Ferris Bueller's Day Off) bursts in on the equally fabulous Michelle Forbes (Kalifornia), who just happens to be all over Mia's husband like ugly on an ape. For some reason, Mia joins up with Michelle and the two hit the road, picking up a mysterious hitchhiker (Gil Bellows) who anxiously clings to his old suitcase--almost as if it were full of money! The girls join Gil at a hot springs in the middle of nowhere, where Mia gets naked a whole hell of a lot, providing the main reason for watching this movie (assuming you're of that bent). Michelle gets a little cheesed because Gil goes for Mia and not her, but hey, we're all adults here (and besides, Michelle was bangin' Mia's old man--I think she owes her). The cop eventually stumbles across the trio, and things move pretty fast from there. This flick constantly surprised me--not always in a good way. Any movie set in a desert is cool by me, though--and Mia Sara gets naked, for Pete's sake! Available August 20 (Republic Pictures)
