Gina Gershon (a butchy ex-con turned handywoman) and Jennifer
Tilly (a high-class gangster's moll) engage in some amusingly
sweaty dialogue, become lovers and decide to rip off Jennifer's
mobster boyfriend for a cool couple million. The Wachowski brothers
are treading dangerously close to Coen brothers territory, but
this new age lesbian film noir flick has a few original twists
and turns up its celluloid sleeves. The leads are pitch perfect,
and the clever script rapidly turns into a claustrophobic nailbiting
thriller. Admittedly, the film's central conceit is a good one:
In a film noir with two female leads, how can you tell who the
femme fatale is?
