This 1969 Armenian film (originally banned by the Russian government)
traces the life of 18th-century poet Sayat Nova ("The King
of Song") as he rises from a child working as a wool dyer
to courtier and to monk. Director Sergi Paradjonov uses a series
of painterly images strung together to form tableaux revealing
the most intimate and visionary moments of Nova's life. The result
is a stream of religeous, poetic and local iconography which has
an arcane and astonishing beauty.
