I doubt I have to tell anyone that the high point of my week
when I was a tyke was getting to stay up late on weekend nights
to watch the "Creepy Creature Feature" and see stuff
like Night of the Living Dead, The Monster that Challenged
the World and of course, Godzilla movies. And while we're
on the subject--does anyone remember KOAT's late-night movie host
"Captain Space?" He came to Earth inside a giant egg
(pre-"Mork & Mindy") and tried to sell watches or
something, then ended up with a TV show. His co-host was a big
computer labeled "Input" and "Outpup." Yeah,
"pup." I was so obsessed with this show that I actually
did a drawing of the Captain and sent it in, along with a request
that he show Destroy All Monsters. I almost peed in my
young pants when he read the letter on the air and held my drawing
up to the camera, lemme tell ya. He even wrote me a short letter
telling me how they couldn't run Destroy All Monsters because
KOB bought it out from under them, and I held onto that letter
for many years. Jeez, was I crushed when I anxiously flipped over
to Channel 7 one night only to discover the Captain's show was
history. There were a few half-assed attempts at local movie-host
shows afterwards: "Darcinia, the Duchess of Darkness,"
Dickie Bowles and "The Bedtime Bombs," some big-boobed
gal named "Feverita," but none of them had the same
magic (although "The Bedtime Bombs" was pretty cool
at first, when it was done live and viewers could call in to have
Dickie deliver stupid messages to their pals). Captain, if you're
out there, thanks for all the thrills--I've got some real fond
memories of that show of yours.
