Grosse Pointe Blank

Weekly Alibi

DIRECTED BY: George Armitage

REVIEWED: 04-09-97

Deadpan charmer John Cusack plays a clinically depressed hit man who decides to confront a few "issues" and return to his 10-year high school reunion. Cusack (who helped pen the witty script) is terrific. Dan Ackroyd (playing a bad guy killer out to form a hit man's union) has his best role in at least a decade. The humor gets progressively blacker and progressively more subtle, but every single joke will have you laughing for days. Maybe it's just because my 10-year reunion was last summer, but this one really struck a nerve. One of the cleverest films I've seen all year. Do not miss it!
