Guimba the Tyrant

Weekly Alibi

DIRECTED BY: Cheick Oumar Sissoko

REVIEWED: 02-26-97

This sumptuous epic, set in a legendary past filled with flourishing cities, proud courts and gorgeously costumed nobles, provides a biting allegory of present-day African politics. The Shakespeare-like story of a mad king's descent into self-destruction captured the prize for Best Film at the Pan-African Film Festival.
