From Czechoslovakia comes this Oscar-nominated tale of a philandering cellist in Communist Eastern Europe who suddenly finds himself stuck with a five-year-old Russian kid. Naturally, the cute kid melts our hard-hearted bachelor's heart and we all get warm fuzzy feelings. Surprisingly, this film works despite its sappy premise. What could have been a maudlin "can't we all just get along?" parable is instead an affecting and multi-layered tale of life, love and politics.
