Lone Star

Weekly Alibi

DIRECTED BY: John Sayles

REVIEWED: 07-17-96

Writer/director John Sayles (The Brother From Another Planet, The Secret of Roan Inish) continues to impress with this near epic tale of a small Texas/Mexico border town. Young sheriff Sam Deeds lives under a difficult legacy--his father was the legendary lawman Buddy Deeds. A recently uncovered corpse in the desert, however, may prove that saintly Buddy Deeds murdered his evil boss Charley Wade back in the 50s. Poor Sam is left to investigate a crime no one wants solved. Sayles also finds time to ruminate on the complex hierarchy of racial tensions within this secret-ridden small town. The true subject of the film is history and it's elusive, completely subjective nature. Complex and quite brilliant.
