Manny & Lo

Weekly Alibi

DIRECTED BY: Lisa Krueger

REVIEWED: 09-18-96

Director Lisa Krueger's first film is a confident, original indie about two young sisters who go on the lam instead of being shipped off to foster homes when their mother dies. Eleven-year-old Amanda (Scarlett Johansson) and sixteen-year-old Laurel (Aleska Paladino) do the "Thelma and Louise" thing until an unexpected pregnancy brings their adventures to an end. The sisters kidnap a maternity store clerk (Mary Kay Place), who seems to know everything about babies, and hole up in a mountain cabin to wait for the inevitable. This low budget neo-feminist hostage drama tends to drift slowly in parts, but three magnetic performances (particularly by Johansson the all-too-worldly-wise kid sister) keep attentions glued to the screen.
