This anthology flick, "based on the stories of H.P.
Lovecraft," is finally getting a release in the states after
a long period of being relegated to the bootleg tables at comic
conventions. "The Drowned" tells the tale of a man (Bruce
Payne) who inherits one of those funky old houses that's about
to collapse into the sea. A letter from his long-dead uncle explains
the evil that dwells in the place--and you know what that means:
weird, drippy fish monsters and "Videodrome" fave Maria
Ford! In "The Cold," the under-appreciated David Warner
plays a mad scientist living in a boarding house who, mysteriously,
can't function if he gets too warm--but he falls in love and wants
to do the mattress macarena, and you know how difficult it is
to partake of that particular thrill without things heating up
at least a little. "Whispers" is a whacked-out tale
of two cops who stumble into a subterranean nightmare world in
downtown L.A. Now, for the most part this movie's a little weak,
but it's worth seeing for this downbeat segment, which had me
squirming, and for the cool framing sequence featuring the always-terrific
Jeffrey Combs (The Frighteners), decked out in prosthetic
makeup that makes him look like Bruce Campbell, as ol' H.P. himself.
