Filmmaker Billy Bob Thornton takes on the Wellesian effort of
writing, directing and starring in this tale of a mildly retarded
killer released from a mental institution after 25 years. The
effort has obviously paid off. Last week, Thornton nabbed two
Oscar nods (one for writing, one for acting). Thornton inhabits
the role of Karl Childers like a second skin, but the supporting
cast is phenomenal as well. Singer-turned-actor Dwight Yoakam
is startling as an abusive redneck and young actor Lucas Black
is an absolute revelation as the small-town boy whom Karl befriends.
Please do not miss this film.
