When Rock'n'Roll High came out, kids would go from Raul's to Dobie Theatre
for the midnight showing and danced in the aisles.

In the tradition of Sixties beach party and teen-movie nonsense, Rock'n'Roll
High School (D: Alan Arkush, 1979; with P.J. Soles, Paul Bartel, Clint Howard,
Dick Miller, Vince Van Patten, the Ramones) is the story of high school, a rock
band, exploding white mice, a lovesick teenage girl (Soles), making out, hall monitors,
and an evil principal. Roger Corman produced it, with erstwhile director Bartel and
Corman regular Dick Miller putting in appearances. Sure it's goofy, but it's such
good-natured, infectious silliness that you can't help but wish that there was a
drive-in nearby to see it at. The highlight, of course, is the revved-up Ramones
at their red-hot, rubber-burning foot-to-the-floor best, ripping through favorites
like "Pinhead," "Sheena Is a Punk Rocker," "Teenage Lobotomy,"
"Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue," etc. Nearly 20 years later, the live footage
of the bruddas Ramone is still compelling. Joey sings to P.J. Soles in the shower
and utters the deathless lines, "I want some," and "We really like
your town and we muba baba bibi."
