The Peacemaker

The first rocket out of the Dreamworks SKG plant is a snazzy yet superficial action drama. Nuclear scientist Dr. Julia Kelly (Nicole Kidman), who's turned from designing nuclear weapons to thwarting their proliferation, joins forces with her military liaison, Col. Thomas Devoe (George Clooney), after the Russian Mafia steals a warhead. Their world gleams, all shiny high-tech. There are clever script machinations that clunk as often as click, and the action is punctuated by on-screen titles reminding us that our dynamic duo is jetting around to keep the globe safe for our children. Devoe fights with his fists and his dirty underworld contacts; Kelly fights for what's right. It's reasonably gripping, but there's far too much sketchbook-sanctimony, such as near the end, when a Sarajevan piano-teacher-turned-terrorist moans about his dead child while clutching an LED-timered nuke, sprawled across an altar in a central Manhattan cathedral. 122m. Panavision.
